About Jeff Tomlinson (Hwaen Ch'uqi)

Hwaen Ch'uqi is a native Lancaster-area artist who has become an elite, international classical pianist.  Born near Cuzco, Peru, Hwaen began his musical studies at the age of five upon arriving to the United States as a Suzuki piano student for eight years with Cindy Wittenberg of the group, “Silver, Wood, and Ivory”.  He has also studied under Dr. John Harrison, formerly of Elizabethtown, and at the PA Academy of Music in Lancaster.  He is a graduate of Manheim Central School District.  He currently holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music, studying under Natalya Antonova.

Hwaen has performed extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia as a soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, teacher, composer and improviser.  Most recently, Mr. Ch’uqi was accepted to participate in the Sviatoslav Richter International Piano Competition in Moscow. He will be in Russia in the second half of June, representing his native country. Video recordings from 111 applicants from 31 countries were reviewed from which 35 were chosen for this prestigious event.

Upcoming is an interview on Dr. Mehmet Oz's show, found on the Oprah and Friends network of XM Satellite Radio. The taping will be on June 11. It will air soon thereafter. Also is an appearance in the PBS documentary "Music and Instinct," to be aired internationally in 2009. In July, Hwaen will perform at the United Nations in a program centering on Peru.

Hwaen describes his condition by saying, “If I ever refer to it, I merely say that I ‘cannot’ or ‘am unable to see.’  I prefer this specificity over a broad spectrum of stereotypes which is often associated with the words, ‘blind, visually, impaired, etc.’ These days, I frame the events surrounding my condition in the grander context of being an Inca, a point of which I am truly proud!”
