The Story of the Piano Patio

Not long after Cindy and Dale built their home, the father of one of Cindy’s piano students came to visit the music studio. A landscape architect by profession, he noticed the unfinished space just outside the studio’s triple doors and had an imaginative idea.

With black-and-white pavers and curved bullnose pieces available, he envisioned something perfectly suited to a piano teacher’s garden: a patio shaped like a grand piano, complete with black-and-white keys.

In 2002, that idea became reality. Built to approximately 2½ times the size of an actual grand piano, the patio transformed an ordinary hardscape into a lasting piece of garden art.

This photograph, taken from the second-story bedroom above, offers one of the best views of the entire “piano”—a place where music and garden design quite literally became one at Wittenberg Gardens.
