The Story of the Tree Face and the Spheres
Artist Raymond Curanzy III, a longtime friend of Wittenberg Gardens, has shared several of his wooden “Unstructured Structures” with us over the years, adding unexpected pieces of art throughout the garden tours.
For nearly a year, two large spheres sat quietly behind one of the garden beds. Then one day, Raymond arrived carrying two enormous, unusually shaped vines he had rescued from an old tree.
He carried the vines over to the spheres and began twisting, turning, and positioning them. After several attempts—voilà! The old vines and spheres had become one wonderfully intriguing piece of garden art.
And as if it had all been planned from the beginning, the sculpture found itself in exactly the right place, with our whimsical Tree Face peering out from the tree in front. How great that the orange daylilies bloom at its base making it all so wonderful!
Sometimes the best creations at Wittenberg Gardens aren't carefully planned. The pieces simply find one another—and suddenly, there is art.
